BEDFORD — Several people were treated at the hospital and more than 30 displaced after carbon monoxide spread throughout a multi-family house in Bedford on Sunday night, officials said.

Bedford Hills firefighters responded to 201 Babbitt Road at 10:23 p.m. for a report of a smoke condition in the house, where they determined that a boiler had malfunctioned, Fire Chief Joseph Lombardo said.

Lombardo said some residents were taken to Northern Westchester Hospital for symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. More than 30 residents were forced from the house, said Carolyn Sherwin, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross.

The house has been deemed unsafe and uninhabitable until the boiler is fixed, Lombardo said. Sherwin said 16 families were displaced. Volunteers were helping 20 adults and 10 children from 12 families, and were in touch with the four other families, she said.

A temporary reception center was set up at the Bedford Hills Fire Department, Sherwin said.
