By Assistant Chief Jason Nickson
August 10, 2017

Wednesday August 9th proved to be a busy day for Bedford Hills Volunteers, members answered 5 calls for service and participated in the South Salem Annual Fireman's Parade.

The first call came in at 11:15, a dual response to the Fox Lane High School for a commercial fire alarm, Car 2032 and 2033 responded, while Engine 198 was cancelled enroute.

Less then fifteen minutes later, a HAZMAT assignment was dispatched for an accident involving two tractor trailers the struck one another while passing on Bedford Road. Car 2033, Engine 199, Rescue 10 and Utility 6 responded. Due to the amount of product on the roadway Car 2033 requested a consultation from Car 2001, the WCDES Special Operations Chief. C2001 requested HAZMAT 1 to the scene to assist in the cleanup of nearly 30+ gallons of fuel on the roadway. BHFD protected the stromdrains and waterways and stretched (1) 1 3/4 Foamline during the product offload. BHFD and WCDES Hazmat operated for two hours.

In the evening, 30 Members loaded up the apparatus and headed across Route 35 to our neighbors from South Salem for the Annual Firemen's Parade and Carnival. BHFD took home the highest honors of the evening winning "Best Overall" as well as "Best Firematic Color Guard".

While members were at South Salem, Deputy Chief McGill and Lieutenant Kane and a standby crew staffed Engine 198 and handled two additional alarms, a dual response commercial fire alarm with Bedford FD and a residential fire alarm in the first due.
