Ice Rescue Drill with Banksville Fire Department
By Lieutenant Robbie Bancroft
January 11, 2010
On Monday Night January 11th, BHFD conducted an ice rescue drill in conjunction with the Banksville Fire Department at the Heffernan Estate pond on West Patent Road. The night started off at Bedford Hills' Headquarters with a lecture on ice rescue techniques and also the new ice rescue equipment which was purchased in the past year was also reviewed. Members and apparatus then headed over to the Heffernan Estate, where different scenarios were conducted during the course of the night, consisting of both single and double person rescues. Newer members and seasoned members, of both Bedford Hills and Banksville, were given the opportunity to wear the ice rescue suits in both victim and rescuer scenarios. Towards the end of the evening, Banksville's Chief Watson reviewed the ice rescue sled which is carried on Banksville's Mini-Attack and how it is used in ice rescues. Members where then given the chance to try the sled out and see the differences between sled rescues and normal rope and hand ice rescues. A special thanks goes to Mr. Heffernan for graciously allowing the Fire Department use of his pond once again this year and also the Banksville Fire Department for there assistance and participation in the nights training.
